In triangle ABC, a line is drawn from vertex A to a point D on BC. If BC=9 cm, and DC = 3cm, then what is the ratio of the areas of traingle ABD and triangle ADC respectively

In triangle ABC , BC =9 , DC = 3 , so BD = 9-3 = 6
Let the altitude of triangle from vertex A be of length a
Area of ABD = 1/2 * BD * a
Area of ADC = 1/2 *DC * a
Ratio of areas = BD/DC = 2:1

Basically you can remember that areas of triangle are in the same ratios as their base if they are created from a vertex as the altutudes would be equal.
Why? Because there can be only 1 altitude from a point to a line.
